Motorcycle safety is not the other person's responsibility, it's yours. Motorcycles have a higher fatality rate per unit of distance traveled as compared to automobiles. Listen up now! Motorcycle riders under 40 years of age are nearly 36 times more likely to be killed than any other vehicle operators of the same age.

Did you know that 75% of accidents were found to involve both a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle, while the remaining 25% of accidents were single motorcycle accidents? The rather disheartening fact about these reports is that two-thirds of the cases found that the motorcycle rider was at fault. Wake up motorcycle riders, we all know better than to party while riding our two wheeler! Almost 1/2 of fatal accidents show alcohol involvement.

We are not always wrong in a lot of cases and if you are a rider you have witnessed this; that a driver of the other vehicle, violated the motorcycle right-of-way and caused the accident in two-thirds of those cases. You might also want to read that the failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominating factor of motorcycle accidents. When riding your motorcycle you really want to be seen and a good defensive habit is to have the headlamp turned on even in daylight and to wear high visibility clothing like yellow, orange and or bright red jackets.

We can help ourselves by wearing and adhering to the functions of PPE (personal protective equipment). Don't we remember that years ago, a motorcyclist was clad in black, that's right, from head to toe with black and silver studs. But we know the personal protective equipment we should have, for example a full face helmet that will provide the most protection, Actually some motorcycle training sites have banned half helmets. Your personal protective equipment must also include sturdy leather gloves with seams on the outer surface so that they can provide protection.

Jackets are generally made from leather or sometimes synthetic material is used. Any specialty padding that is preferred is up to the the individual's specifics. Pants are made of the same as jackets with maybe padding to the knees etc. Boots should always have rubber soles for non slip and be very light weight. Goggles with a helmet is very important so that when riding in the wind you'll be able to protect your eyes from insects, wind and squinting from rain and wind that can obstruct your vision.

Read your trainer manuals for PPE regulations and safety. It is your life, enjoy riding your motorcycle and teach your grandchildren.
