Even though it is relaxing and fun to ride solo, it's also very enjoyable to be in a riding group with whom you can share the sights, sounds and listen to all their comments and different points of view about the trip. One thing your riding group should remember is that they must commit to driving safely and adhere to all good road habits.

It is probably not a good idea to check up on your friends' riding habits but it is good idea to know about one's friends' bad motorcycle riding habits sooner than later. You may want to discretely ask other friends if they have ever ridden with so and so and was it a great ride or did they ever go on a small safari with the individual in question. You may be surprised at what you might hear; perhaps things like boy, he's crazy on the highway or maybe, that guy's looking for trouble. These would be good enough reasons for you to decide that he would not be a good riding companion.

Traffic rules are made for everyone's safety and those who do not adhere to them are big time trouble makers, for everyone. When entering an intersection, the riders should stay in position and not wander nor try to run a red light. Also, they should not attempt to cross lanes as in moving to the right from the left lane; stay in position so that the vehicle traffic around your group can easily see what you are up to.

If two bikers are going in different directions without proper signaling, the surrounding vehicle traffic may find this very confusing. That's right, the creation of such a dilemma could ultimately result in a bad accident as a result of bike riders who do not know, or adhere to the highway traffic signs and road rules or by a rider who is just thoughtless or stupid enough to ignore those rules.

Some bikers, when riding in formation, like to just over lap the front wheel of their partner's bike but if the front biker sees something immediately ahead and makes a slight turn with no time for a hand signal, the biker that is overlapping is in for trouble and anyone behind him.

Keeping at a steady highway speed within the riding group will make the trip and the ride so much easier for all involved. This is not to say you cannot change your position front or backwards but stay at an even speed and be sure to use the correct signals.

Just watch a race horse. Is it not exciting to watch that great horse make his move and head for the lead post? The horse moves slowly at first, then he gradually gains speed, trotting past the other horses and gently pulling into the post position, winning the race.

Not so different with riding a motorcycle, pick your course without obstructing the traffic and you can safely take the post position.
